*NB: The actual quote is
"There are 100 gasps to the wonder, and even though you may be down to your last gasp, wonders will never cease !"
Also: George is trying to promote himself as the "Wondering Jew"*, not the "Wandering Jew"
*(as he wonders what's going to happen!)

Belfast Telegraph (Gail Walker Column) - 17th January
Hurricane brings a touch of stardust to the election trail There isn't much amusement in Northern Ireland politics, but the news that Alex "Hurricane" Higgins is contemplating standing for election certainly raises a smile. The former two-times world snooker champion may mount a campaign for the Make Politicians History Party - an offshoot of the Rainbow Coalition. There are several misapprehensions about Higgy which surface from time to time in the media. One is that he is destitute; another that he dying; another that his brain is shot to pieces by alcohol. Failing all these, he is often thought of as something of a "sad case". Well, none of these is remotely true. Serious illness and the high-life have certainly taken their toll, but Higgins is very far from the pitiable figure and stereotype they would have us believe. In fact, he cuts quite a dash and was prominent among the mourners at George Best's funeral in Stormont. Now, standing under the pseudonym of "Higgy Stardust", the legend plans to change the name of Belfast to "Best City" and hopes to declare the city an independent State in time to host the 2020 Olympics. Mind you, absurd though those ideas are - that's the whole point after all - they are probably more achievable than conventional political aims of a working Assembly, cross-party support for the PSNI and devolved government. Not even Higgy would disgrace himself by proposing those, even in jest. |
